Bound To Go: Illuminating Legacy Of African American Folk Tradition Bound To Go is a landmark collection of 35 songs from the African American folk tradition that includes spirituals, shout songs from the Sea Islands, prison ballads and secular songs. Lovingly compiled, created and produced by Andrew Calhoun, a working folk singer, the collection shines new light onto some of the most moving and important songs in the American folk music tradition.

Poetry Band 'Rooms' Redefines the Christian Spiritual In 2008, Wilson and Poetry Band are once again breaking the sound barrier by staging a musical from his book "Rooms." Described as a celebration of the Holy Ghost, and a spiritual journey, the theatrical performance will combine spoken word and song and amazing new music. There are not many spirituals in musical history, and Poetry Band plans to advance the good cause by producing "Rooms" as a spiritual musical for CD/ DVD and possible film. Welcome to the 21st century.

"A Poem for Earth" Contest The Good Life News and Black Dog Promotions have announced that they will be sponsoring a charity poetry contest titled, "A Poem for Earth" on Thursday, September 20th beginning at 7pm at the Big Fish Pub in Tempe. The event will support many of Arizona's finest conservation and environmental groups with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Environmental Fund for Arizona.

Durham is Becoming a National Hotbed fo Spoken-Word Poetry "Connected to words like Siamese twins": That line from Dasan Ahanu's poem "Deep in Thought" epitomizes the rise of the Triangle's spoken-word community. Metaphors and similes dangle with cadence and intonation. The words-bled from poets who carry pens, pads and bags filled with homemade books and CDs in store-bought cases-entertain and inspire. These poets live in these words, and, symbiotically, those words live off of their poets.

Red Feather Woman Wins 2006 Nammy Award Red Feather Woman's recording, 'The Keepers of the Earth', was selected from five finalists and announced at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, FL. The Nammy awards were established in 1998 to help promote and preserve Native American music throughout the United States and around the world. Hip-Hop Can Find its Roots in Spoken Word Remember before that producer laid the beat, there was a 'poem' wrote or a feeling exposed on paper. Many hip-hop and rap artists are also what you could call poets; the late west coast rap icon Tupac Shakur (2Pac) is one of the most famous.

Spirit in the Words Poetry Program Winners The 'Spirit in the Words' poetry program has been offered at diverse journalism conferences throughout the U.S. which include UNITY, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Asian American Journalists Association and the Native American Journalists Association. The poetry program invites participants to write, read and perform their works, in an effort to further the art of poetry.

Aisha Raison-spoken word artist, photographer and producer-has recited poetry all through the south since 1997. Starting off in Memphis at the Firehouse on October 24, 1997, she emerged as a developing writer with a curiosity for making the audience...well, comfortable.
On April 9, 1998, Aisha created Afrodeesiack Press in order to publish on her own and help others as well. Her first chapbook 'Afrodeesiack: African-American Erotic Poetry' set the stage for her as an erotic writer, helping her emerge on the scene not only as a poet, but as an independent woman who wasn't afraid to open her mouth and say what she wanted.

Spoken Word Artists Are Part of True Hip-Hop Spoken Word Artist are often overlooked in the hip-hop arena, as many of us would rather hear the blasting bass beat and lyrics set to catchy beats that keep our head moving.
Spoken word is just rap with out the beat; it is a form of poetry with deep roots in the hip-hop culture. If you are not familiar with the spoken word artist then here is an artist who can open a whole new world beyond rap for you.
There is a spoken word artist called C-7 who hails from Boston, Mass. He is a naval officer and a devoted father of two. He has been known for his gritty, realistic and straight to the point style of poetry.
