'N' Word Debate in Hip Hop Misses Bigger Picture There is a much ‘bigger picture’ which stems off the recent debate in hip hop about the use of the 'N' word, and no one really is addressing it. Words are an important ingredient to good hip hop music. Great flowing rap along with that hip hop snap beat is what makes a good hip hop track. Lately the talk has been the use of the 'N' word and the effects that it has on our youth. It has even been suggested that we 'ban' the use of the word 'nigga' in hip hop and rap music.

Hip Hop Culture: It's a Family Matter by Yvonne Bynoe Recently I was watching the talk show "My Two Cents" that airs on BETJ and the discussion was about the "Talented Tenth." Scholar-Activist, W.E.B. DuBois asserted that it was the top ten percent of Blacks, those people with vision, perseverance and education who would lift the masses from ignorance and poverty. Later in his career DuBois discarded this theory after observing that middle and upper income Blacks were not necessarily enlightened or even interested in helping their less fortunate brothers and sisters....Anyway back to the cable program. When one guest stated that 50 Cent was a leader I immediately bristled up. As far as I was concerned 50 Cent is a multi-millionaire entertainer, but I was not aware that he supported any cause other than fattening his pockets. I have no indication that he was putting anything on the line to contribute to the advancement of Black Americans. Then as I sat back and gave it some deep thought. I had to admit that 50 Cent is a leader, not because he has done anything, but because Black folks have made him one.

Hip Hop May Not Be Dead - But Internet Radio May Soon Be A few years ago I ran into former FCC Chairman Michael Powell as he was leaving Jesse Jackson's Wall Street Project conference in New York. Davey D Speaks on Russell Simmons & Hip Hop The fact that we helped create a climate to start to turn things around is a good thing. If it manifests itself in stations saying they wanna change up then that's great. If it means it will help get more people excited about doing a different type of rap highlighting different subject matter then I'm all for it. If it means Russell (who for the past few years has said he would never try and tell an artist to change his or her lyrics) is now calling for an end to hateful and derogatory words in commercially-released material, I say that's good thing. We should push harder and encourage more to follow suit...

Hip Hop Won't Change Over the Non Use of 3 Words Don Imus made his comments and that started the closer look at hip hop. Did anyone really think that anyone would really be able to change hip hop and the mind set of the hip hop culture. This is a lot deeper than the use of three words. When Russell Simmons and Dr. Benjamin Chavis on behalf of the Hip Hop Summit Action Network "recommend that the recording and broadcast industries voluntarily remove/bleep/delete the misogynistic words "bitch" and "ho" and the racially offensive word "nigger", did they truly believe this action would change the mind set of main stream hip hop?

Don Imus Aside: Will Hip Hop Change or Be Declared Dead As a culture rap music is a very big part of hip hop. Rappers need to be aware of the power of the tongue and the impact they have on youth. Reid, Sylvia Rhone, Mitch Bainwol, Damon Dash and others should have been addressing; instead of trying to making some of these performers seem like 'poets'.

Is Hip Hop Really the Blame for this Don Imus Thing I have a question for the masses. Don Imus and his supporters have been running around saying they learned about the phrase 'Nappy Headed Hoes' from rappers. They said it's because of Hip Hop that they felt it was ok to joke around in the way that they did. Now I'll be the first to confess I'm not up on everything So I gotta ask folks; What rapper referred to sistas as "Nappy Headed Hoes"? I recall the group Nappy Roots. I heard Ludacris say he has hoes in different area codes, but what song or group was Don Imus listening to that he got inspired? What song was this and when was it played on the radio?

An Open Letter from Conscious Hip Hop Figure Sista Kiilu For those who are unfamiliar, Sista Kiilu is the cornerstone for conscious Hip Hop here on the West coast. She was one of those elders who never ran away and turned her nose up to Hip Hop when people were starting out. Instead of lambasting it, she took a 'who's who' of artists and activist under her wings and continued in the tradition of the Black Panthers by giving many folks serious political and social education. Before there were groups like Public Enemy, it was through Kiilu that many of us learned about political prisoners and the plight of prisoners like Mumia Abu Jamal. She's the one that would write to everyone behind the walls and encourage us to follow suit. We learned about the true story of Assata Shakur through Kiilu.

Hip Hop, Mass Media and 21st Century Like mass media and popular culture, hip hop too is often removed from its proper context as the cultural expression of a domestically-held internal colony otherwise known as Black America. The colonialism that prefigures its creation and subsequent popularity is too often absent from popular discussion of hip hop and as such leads to confused analyses and a tremendous amount of inaction surrounding the issues involved. I use the term colonialism simply to draw attention to the systemic (i.e. intentional) maltreatment of a majority of those considered "citizens," and to the particular form that this maltreatment takes regarding North America's Black/African internal colony. By this I mean that the basic tenets of a colonial relationship remain intact for Black people in the United States.

So You Wanna Be a Rap Superstar In this two part interview Wendy Day breaks bread on a variety of topics and shows us how to avoid industry pitfalls. We start off talking about the typical recording contract that many up and coming artists find themselves locked into. The most problematic are production deals where the producer is the middle man between the artist and label. In theory the money and resources are supposed to trickle down. In way too many cases they simply don't and that's when Wendy gets that frantic phone call from an artist trying to escape a bad situation. Audio interview inside.

Hip Hop Giveaway - Tupac (2Pac) - 'Pac's Life' on 12' Vinyl ThugLifeArmy.com and their media partner CRNLive.com are pleased to offer the 'Pac's Life' album on 12' vinyl as this months Hip Hop Giveaway. Tupac (2Pac) remains one of hip hop's greatest icons. His life was short but his impact on so many, even outside the realm of hip hop and rap circles, continues to this day. Thru the work of his mother Afeni Shakur and all the staff at TASF (Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation), the legacy of this hip hop icon continues to grow and blossom world wide. The genres of hip hop and rap have never seen, nor will they ever see, another man with the charisma and appeal of Tupac Shakur (2Pac). His life was 'our' life and his passing is our loss. But he remains in the hearts and minds of many because of the truth that was in his words.

Why Commerce is Killing the True Spirit of Hip Hop Many questioned why Nas would say hip-hop - a worldwide phenomenon that has generated billions of dollars - could be "dead." After all, more hip-hop albums are being released then ever before, and the music's influence extends to movies, corporate marketing and theater. That it's dead seems absurd - until you realize Nas was looking beneath the surface.

Is Sexism at the Heart of Hip Hop Today? Beyond Beats and Rhymes, directed by Byron Hurt, featuring Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D and Busta Rhymes. IT WOULD be hard not to notice the violent, misogynistic and homophobic content of mainstream hip hop. For some critics, this content is enough to dismiss rap as infantile, but for devout fans critical of oppressive social structures such as Byron Hurt, director of the documentary Beyond Beats and Rhymes, hip hop deserve more consideration.

Hip Hop Is Dying Hip Hop is dying and ending up on the Medical Examiner's table. The death of Hip Hop will continue unless we gain control over our own social climate. The social disparities are not relegated to health only. We are disparately represented in all policy decision making areas - Economics, Education, Housing, Healthcare, and Criminal Justice. We must concentrate on establishing a foundation of development in these areas in the form of institutions. It is not enough to protest and lobby for political and policy equity.

Hip Hop Artists Need to Become Politicized Artists need to become politicized within the music industry. Not because organizers say so speak about community issues, or because it's the right thing to do. The reality is, if you're truly a "boss" as Slim Thug maintains he is or a "king" or "president of Hip Hop" as Nas and Jay-Z respectively claim then at least stop permitting former slave masters to break you off crumbs and utilize you like sheep. Run the music business not just a business within the music industry. The reports of DJ Drama and employees of Gangsta Grillz being raided in Atlanta, Ga on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 by SWAT, FBI, and apparently the RIAA for bootlegging mixtapes was a clear message to Hip Hop. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) said blatantly, we run Hip Hop and any music genre, whether considered black music or not.

An Open Letter from Hip Hop Artist Ras Kass Anyone who wants to get in the music industry needs to read this open letter just so you can understand how sinister some of these major record labels can get. What hip hop artist Ras Kass describes is a straight up share cropping system. The lawsuit tactic they employed is outright scary. If you think we've made it in 2007 think again-Prince once upon a time had to resort to putting the word slave on his cheek because of a similar situation. Ras Kass may not have that word emblazoned on his body but from what he broke down, he's just that a slave to the corporate power structure. Read this and learn people - Davey D (Hip Hop Activist / Hip Hop Historian).

Hip Hop is not Dead - But it is on Life Support Hip Hop is not dead; but it is on 'life support'. Someone needs to yell 'CLEAR' and send a jolt of life back into the music and the culture. Hip Hop is an art form not a cash cow and should be respected as such. If fans keep falling for the 'okie dokie' or settling for the notion that the majors know best; we will have to settle for the weak music being put out by many of these artists. We will see a steady decline in hip hop until it reaches the 'pop slop' level and then none of us will be happy.

Shattering the Myths by Hip Hop Luminary Shock G To say that Tupac "originally started as a dancer", as many people & publications often do, not only insults his true title & essence at that time, (emcee, public activist, & social critic) but it also insults digital undergrounds awareness & recognition of who he really was at the time. Worst of all, it promotes that it's uncool to dance, and that no self respecting revolutionary, "thug", or "gangsta" would be caught dancing; as if Pac graduated outta dancing into a stronger male. Nope, sorry, he was already the strong male revolutionary, with 2Pacalyspe Now recorded, BEFORE he danced with d.u. (Digital Underground).
